Maxwell material
Builds on Relaxation modulusCreep
Example
The Maxwell material is the model of a linear spring of modulus in series with a linear dashpot of viscosity . In series the stress is the same in both elements and the strains add, so with and one gets Let be the relaxation time. Relaxation: a strain step at time gives , and then gives , so the relaxation modulus is . Creep: a stress step gives , so the creep compliance is . The stress depends on the past strain rates and fades with time, so the Maxwell material is viscoelastic.
Remarks
The creep strain grows without bound under constant stress and the stress relaxes fully to . So the Maxwell material behaves like a fluid on long time scales and like a solid on short ones. It does not describe the bounded creep of most polymers, which the Kelvin–Voigt material and the standard linear solid capture better.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
