Kelvin–Voigt material
Builds on Maxwell materialRelaxation modulusCreepDirac delta function
Example
The Kelvin–Voigt material is the model of a linear spring of modulus in parallel with a linear dashpot of viscosity . In parallel the strain is the same in both elements and the stresses add, so Let be the retardation time. Creep: a stress step at time with gives the linear equation , whose solution is so the creep compliance is . The strain approaches the elastic value with a delay, which is the rate dependence of a viscoelastic material.
Remarks
Unlike the Maxwell material, the creep is bounded and fully recoverable after unloading. A sudden strain step would need an infinite stress, since the dashpot cannot move instantly; in the sense of distributions the relaxation modulus is , with the Dirac delta. So the model describes creep and recovery well but stress relaxation poorly.
