Definition

Let Σ\Sigma be a thermodynamic system and let 𝒮\mathcal{S} be the set of its equilibrium states. A state function of Σ\Sigma is a function F ⁣:𝒮→ℝF \colon \mathcal{S} \to \R. For a process from a state AA to a state BB, the change of FF is ΔF=F(B)−F(A)\Delta F = F(B) - F(A). So ΔF\Delta F depends only on AA and BB, not on the path between them.

Remarks

For a fixed amount of ideal gas with states (p,V)(p, V), the temperature T=pV/(nR)T = pV/(nR) is a state function. Here nn is the amount of gas and RR is the gas constant. The work done on the gas is not a state function: it is not determined by the end states, since two paths between the same states can give different work. When 𝒮\mathcal{S} is a smooth manifold and FF is differentiable, the differential dFdF is exact, and ∮dF=0\oint dF = 0 around every closed path.

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 4 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
