Measure and integration Construction of measures Theorem

Steinhaus theorem

Builds on Lebesgue measureNeighbourhoodHaar measure

Statement

Let n≥1n \ge 1 and let A⊆ℝnA \subseteq \R^n be a Lebesgue measurable set with λ(A)>0\lambda(A) > 0, where λ\lambda is Lebesgue measure. Then the difference set A−A={a−b:a,b∈A}A - A = \set{a - b : a, b \in A} contains an open ball centred at 00.

Remarks

One proof uses inner regularity to find a compact set K⊆AK \subseteq A with 0<λ(K)<∞0 < \lambda(K) < \infty. The function f(x)=λ(K∩(K+x))f(x) = \lambda(K \cap (K + x)) is continuous and f(0)=λ(K)>0f(0) = \lambda(K) > 0, so f(x)>0f(x) > 0 for xx near 00. If f(x)>0f(x) > 0, then some k∈Kk \in K also lies in K+xK + x, so x=k−k′x = k - k' with k,k′∈Kk, k' \in K, and x∈A−Ax \in A - A. Example: if A⊆ℝA \subseteq \R is a measurable set of positive measure, then every real number tt with ∣t∣\abs{t} small enough is a difference of two points of AA. The hypothesis λ(A)>0\lambda(A) > 0 is needed: A=ℤA = \Z has measure zero, and ℤ−ℤ=ℤ\Z - \Z = \Z contains no interval around 00. The same statement holds in every locally compact group for a measurable set of positive Haar measure, with AA−1A A^{-1} in place of A−AA - A.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem is a key step in automatic continuity results: for instance, a Lebesgue measurable additive function f ⁣:ℝ→ℝf \colon \R \to \R is continuous, hence linear. It also shows that a measurable proper subgroup of ℝ\R has measure zero, since a subgroup containing an interval around 00 is all of ℝ\R. Its analogue for Baire category is the Pettis lemma.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
