Steklov eigenvalue problem
Builds on LaplacianSobolev spaceDirichlet-to-Neumann operator
Problem
Let be a bounded domain with Lipschitz boundary and outer unit normal . Find all for which some nonzero solves in the weak sense. Here is the Laplacian and is a Sobolev space. Such numbers are the Steklov eigenvalues of , and one asks how they depend on the geometry of .
Remarks
The Steklov eigenvalues are the eigenvalues of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator of , which maps boundary values to the normal derivative of the harmonic extension of . They form a sequence , and belongs to the constant functions. Example: for the unit disc, the functions and are harmonic with on the circle, so the eigenvalues are . Weinstock proved that among simply connected planar domains of given perimeter, the disc maximises .
