Definition
Let a compressible flow have velocity and local speed of sound on a region . The flow is supersonic on if its local Mach number satisfies for all . A flow past a body is called supersonic when its free stream Mach number is greater than .
Remarks
Take steady plane flow with a uniform stream along the -axis and small disturbances. The perturbation potential solves This equation is hyperbolic for , in contrast with the elliptic subsonic case of the Prandtl–Glauert transformation. Its characteristics are the lines , which make the Mach angle with the stream. Example: air at ; then , and a small disturbance at a point affects only the wedge of half-angle behind it. Non-example: a flow at is subsonic, and its disturbances spread in all directions. In usage, supersonic often means , the range between transonic and hypersonic flow.
