Symmetric derivative
Builds on FunctionLimit of a functionDerivativeDifference quotient
Definition
Let be an open interval, let be a function, and let . The function is symmetrically differentiable at if the limit exists and is a real number. The number is the symmetric derivative of at .
Remarks
If is differentiable at , then is the average of two difference quotients with increments and . Both tend to , so . The symmetric derivative does not use the value . For example, the indicator function of has symmetric derivative at , although it is not continuous there.
Example: at . For , the quotient is , so , while does not exist.
Non-example: at . The quotient is , which tends to , so the limit is not a real number.
