Description

Work in the Georgi–Glashow model on ℝ3\R^3, with static fields. Its fields are an SU(2)SU(2) gauge field AiaA_i^a and a Higgs field ϕa\phi^a in the adjoint representation, with a=1,2,3a = 1, 2, 3. Let e>0e > 0 be the coupling, v>0v > 0 and λ≥0\lambda \ge 0. A static configuration with zero electric field has energy E=∫ℝ3(12BiaBia+12(Diϕ)a(Diϕ)a+λ4(ϕaϕa−v2)2)d3x.E = \int_{\R^3} \left( \frac{1}{2} B_i^a B_i^a + \frac{1}{2} (D_i\phi)^a (D_i\phi)^a + \frac{\lambda}{4} \left(\phi^a \phi^a - v^2\right)^2 \right) d^3x. Here BiaB_i^a is the magnetic field of AA and DiD_i the covariant derivative in the adjoint representation. The 't Hooft–Polyakov monopole is a static solution of the field equations with finite energy. It has the spherically symmetric form ϕa(x)=xar h(r),Aia(x)=ϵaijxjer2(1−K(r)),\phi^a(x) = \frac{x^a}{r} \, h(r), \qquad A_i^a(x) = \epsilon_{aij} \frac{x^j}{e r^2} \left(1 - K(r)\right), with r=∣x∣r = \abs{x}, h(r)→vh(r) \to v and K(r)→0K(r) \to 0 as r→∞r \to \infty, and with signs as in the usual convention.

Remarks

At infinity the Higgs field points radially, ϕa≈v xa/r\phi^a \approx v \, x^a / r. This "hedgehog" map from a large sphere to the sphere ϕaϕa=v2\phi^a \phi^a = v^2 has degree 11, a topological invariant that finite-energy deformations cannot change. Far away the symmetry is spontaneously broken from SU(2)SU(2) to U(1)U(1), and the unbroken U(1)U(1) field is that of a magnetic charge 4π/e4\pi/e in these units. So the monopole is a smooth, finite-energy soliton that looks from far away like a Dirac magnetic monopole.

The energy satisfies the Bogomolny bound E≥4πv∣n∣/eE \ge 4\pi v \abs{n} / e, where nn is the degree of the Higgs field at infinity. In the limit λ→0\lambda \to 0, the bound is attained by solutions of the first-order equations Bia=±(Diϕ)aB_i^a = \pm (D_i\phi)^a. For n=1n = 1 the solution is explicit, the Prasad–Sommerfield solution: with ξ=evr\xi = e v r, K=ξsinh⁡ξ,h=v(coth⁡ξ−1ξ).K = \frac{\xi}{\sinh\xi}, \qquad h = v \left( \coth\xi - \frac{1}{\xi} \right).

Gerard 't Hooft and Alexander Polyakov found the solution independently in 1974. It shows that a gauge theory whose unbroken group is U(1)U(1) inside a compact non-abelian group predicts magnetic monopoles.
