Definition
Let be a topological space with its Borel σ-algebra, and let be a set of probability measures on . is tight if for every there is a compact set such that A sequence of random variables with values in is tight if the set of their laws is tight.
Remarks
On , a family is tight if and only if as , because the compact sets are the closed bounded sets. Example: the normal laws with form a tight family. Given , choose with for standard normal; then works, since . Non-example: the point masses , , on . Each compact lies in some , and then for . Also non-tight: the normal laws , , whose mass spreads out. A single Borel probability measure on a Polish space is tight, and so is every finite family. On a Polish space, Prokhorov's theorem says that is tight if and only if it is relatively compact for weak convergence. Every sequence of real random variables that converges in distribution is tight.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
