Definition

Let FF be a field of characteristic different from 22, and let (V+,V−)(V^+, V^-) be a Jordan pair over FF with triple products {⋅,⋅,⋅}\set{\cdot, \cdot, \cdot}. For x∈V+x \in V^+ and y∈V−y \in V^-, let D(x,y)D(x, y) be the linear map of V+⊕V−V^+ \oplus V^- given by z↦{x,y,z}z \mapsto \set{x, y, z} on V+V^+ and w↦−{y,x,w}w \mapsto -\set{y, x, w} on V−V^-. Let 𝔡\mathfrak{d} be the linear span of all D(x,y)D(x, y). The Tits–Kantor–Koecher algebra is the vector space TKK(V+,V−)=V−⊕𝔡⊕V+\mathrm{TKK}(V^+, V^-) = V^- \oplus \mathfrak{d} \oplus V^+ with the bilinear bracket defined by:

  1. [x,x′]=0[x, x'] = 0 for x,x′∈V+x, x' \in V^+, and [y,y′]=0[y, y'] = 0 for y,y′∈V−y, y' \in V^-;
  2. [x,y]=D(x,y)=−[y,x][x, y] = D(x, y) = -[y, x] for x∈V+x \in V^+ and y∈V−y \in V^-;
  3. [D,v]=D(v)=−[v,D][D, v] = D(v) = -[v, D] for D∈𝔡D \in \mathfrak{d} and v∈V+∪V−v \in V^+ \cup V^-;
  4. [D,D′]=DD′−D′D[D, D'] = DD' - D'D for D,D′∈𝔡D, D' \in \mathfrak{d}.

For a Jordan algebra JJ, one applies this to the pair (J,J)(J, J) with {x,y,z}=(xy)z+(zy)x−(zx)y\set{x, y, z} = (xy)z + (zy)x - (zx)y.

Remarks

The identity of a Jordan pair gives [D(u,v),D(x,y)]=D({u,v,x},y)−D(x,{v,u,y})[D(u, v), D(x, y)] = D(\set{u, v, x}, y) - D(x, \set{v, u, y}), so clause 4 stays in 𝔡\mathfrak{d}. With these clauses, TKK(V+,V−)\mathrm{TKK}(V^+, V^-) is a Lie algebra, graded with V−V^-, 𝔡\mathfrak{d}, V+V^+ in degrees −1-1, 00, 11.

Example: J=FJ = F with its usual product, so {x,y,z}=xyz\set{x, y, z} = xyz. Put e=1∈V+e = 1 \in V^+, f=2∈V−f = 2 \in V^- and h=D(1,2)h = D(1, 2). Then hh acts by 22 on V+V^+ and by −2-2 on V−V^-, so [h,e]=2e[h, e] = 2e, [h,f]=−2f[h, f] = -2f and [e,f]=h[e, f] = h. These are the relations of 𝔰𝔩2(F)\mathfrak{sl}_2(F).

Non-example: 𝔤𝔩2(F)\mathfrak{gl}_2(F) with the grading by e12e_{12}, the diagonal matrices and e21e_{21} is not the TKK algebra of (F,F)(F, F). Its degree 00 part is 22-dimensional, while 𝔡\mathfrak{d} is spanned by the single map D(1,1)D(1, 1).
