Tolman–Oppenheimer–Volkoff equation
Builds on Einstein field equationsPerfect fluidSchwarzschild metric
Statement
Let be the gravitational constant and the speed of light. Consider a static, spherically symmetric spacetime with metric filled with a static perfect fluid of mass density (energy density ) and pressure . Assume the metric solves the Einstein field equations with zero cosmological constant, is regular at the centre, and . Then The equation for is the Tolman–Oppenheimer–Volkoff equation; with the equation for and an equation of state it determines the structure of the star.
Remarks
The component of the Einstein equations gives the equation for , the component gives , and the conservation law gives . Combining them gives the equation for .
To build a star one adds an equation of state , chooses a central density, and integrates outward until at a radius . Outside, the solution is matched to the Schwarzschild metric with mass .
When and , the equation reduces to the Newtonian hydrostatic equilibrium . The three relativistic correction factors all make the pressure gradient steeper, so gravity is effectively stronger than in Newton's theory. This is one reason why neutron stars have a maximum mass.
Going deeper
For a student
The equation is the starting point for models of neutron stars and white dwarfs in the relativistic regime. Given an equation of state, it yields the mass–radius relation and the maximum mass of the family of stars. The constant-density solution is the interior Schwarzschild metric, and the general equation leads to Buchdahl's bound for stars with non-increasing density.
