Definition

Twistor space is 𝕋=β„‚4\mathbb{T} = \C^4, with elements written Z=(Ο‰,Ο€)Z = (\omega, \pi) where Ο‰,Ο€βˆˆβ„‚2\omega, \pi \in \C^2 are column vectors. It carries the Hermitian form Ξ£(Z)=Ο‰βˆ—Ο€+Ο€βˆ—Ο‰\Sigma(Z) = \omega^* \pi + \pi^* \omega, of signature (2,2)(2,2). Projective twistor space is ℙ𝕋=β„‚β„™3\mathbb{PT} = \mathbb{CP}^3, the complex projective space of lines in 𝕋\mathbb{T}. Identify a point x=(x0,x1,x2,x3)x = (x^0, x^1, x^2, x^3) of complexified Minkowski space β„‚4\C^4 with the matrix X=(x0+x3x1+ix2x1βˆ’ix2x0βˆ’x3),X = \begin{pmatrix} x^0 + x^3 & x^1 + i x^2 \\ x^1 - i x^2 & x^0 - x^3 \end{pmatrix}, so that det⁑X=(x0)2βˆ’(x1)2βˆ’(x2)2βˆ’(x3)2\det X = (x^0)^2 - (x^1)^2 - (x^2)^2 - (x^3)^2. A twistor Z=(Ο‰,Ο€)Z = (\omega, \pi) is incident with xx if Ο‰=iXΟ€\omega = i X \pi. The twistor correspondence sends xx to the set LxβŠ†β„™π•‹L_x \subseteq \mathbb{PT} of classes of nonzero twistors incident with xx. Twistor theory is the study of spacetime geometry and field equations through this correspondence.

Remarks

For each xx, the incident twistors form the 2-dimensional subspace {(iXΟ€,Ο€):Ο€βˆˆβ„‚2}\set{(iX\pi, \pi) : \pi \in \C^2}, so LxL_x is a projective line. This gives a bijection between complexified Minkowski space and the lines of ℙ𝕋\mathbb{PT} that do not meet the line I={Ο€=0}I = \set{\pi = 0}. All lines of ℙ𝕋\mathbb{PT} form the Grassmannian Gr(2,4)\mathrm{Gr}(2, 4), a compactification of complexified Minkowski space. Example: if xx is real, then XX is Hermitian, and for Ο‰=iXΟ€\omega = iX\pi one gets Ξ£(Z)=βˆ’iΟ€βˆ—XΟ€+iΟ€βˆ—XΟ€=0\Sigma(Z) = -i \pi^* X \pi + i \pi^* X \pi = 0. So real points correspond to lines inside the real hypersurface β„™β„•={Ξ£=0}\mathbb{PN} = \set{\Sigma = 0}. Non-example: the line II is not of the form LxL_x for any point xx of complexified Minkowski space, since every LxL_x contains only twistors with Ο€β‰ 0\pi \ne 0. Two points x,yx, y are null separated exactly when det⁑(Xβˆ’Y)=0\det(X - Y) = 0, that is, when the lines LxL_x and LyL_y meet. Many texts write the incidence relation as Ο‰A=ixAAβ€²Ο€Aβ€²\omega^A = i x^{AA'} \pi_{A'} in two-component spinor notation, with an extra factor 1/21/\sqrt{2} in XX.
