Definition
Let be a compact Hausdorff space, and let be the algebra of continuous functions with the sup norm . A uniform algebra on is a subalgebra such that:
- is closed in for the sup norm, that is, under uniform convergence;
- contains the constant functions;
- separates the points of : for in there is with .
Remarks
A uniform algebra is a commutative unital Banach algebra with for all . Conversely, a commutative unital complex Banach algebra with for all is isometrically isomorphic, through the Gelfand transform, to a uniform algebra on its character space.
Example: the disc algebra on the closed unit disc , the continuous functions on that are holomorphic in the open disc. It is a subalgebra; it is closed because uniform limits of holomorphic functions are holomorphic; it contains the constants; and separates points.
Non-example: on , let . It is a closed subalgebra containing the constants, but no distinguishes from , so clause 3 fails.
By the Stone–Weierstrass theorem, a uniform algebra on that is closed under complex conjugation equals .
