Definition
Let be a ring. The upper nilradical of is the sum of all nil ideals of . These are the two-sided ideals of such that every element of is nilpotent.
Remarks
The sum of two nil ideals and is nil, since is nil and is nil. Hence is itself a nil ideal, and it is the largest nil ideal of . Example: in the nil ideals are and , so . Non-example: in the element is nilpotent but does not lie in . Indeed the only ideals of are and the whole ring, which contains , so . In general , where is the prime radical and the Levitzki radical, and both inclusions can be strict. For a commutative ring the upper nilradical is the nilradical.
