Vorticity
Builds on CurlVector field
Definition
Let be open and let be a continuously differentiable velocity field. The vorticity of is the vector field , the curl of : For a plane flow the vorticity is the scalar . The flow is irrotational if on .
Remarks
Example: the rigid rotation has , twice its angular velocity. Example: the shear flow has , although its streamlines are straight lines. Non-example of an irrotational flow: either of these, since . The field is irrotational, since all the cross derivatives vanish.
