Nonassociative rings and algebras Definition
Weyl group
Definition
Let be a root system in a Euclidean space . For , let be the reflection of in the hyperplane orthogonal to . The Weyl group is the subgroup of the orthogonal group generated by the reflections for .
Remarks
The group is finite: each element permutes the finite set , and an element that fixes every root is the identity, since spans . Example: for , the roots in the hyperplane of give reflections that swap two coordinates, so is the symmetric group acting by permuting coordinates. Non-example: the rotation of the hexagon by maps onto , but it is not in . It is composed with a rotation by , and is not a permutation of the coordinates of the plane . For a base of , the simple reflections with already generate , and they make it a Coxeter group. For a compact connected Lie group, the Weyl group of a compact Lie group is the Weyl group of its root system.
