Weyl group of a compact Lie group
Builds on Compact Lie groupMaximal torusNormaliserQuotient group
Definition
Let be a connected compact Lie group and let be a maximal torus of . Let be the normaliser of . The Weyl group of with respect to is the quotient group It acts on by for and .
Remarks
Example: for and , the normaliser is with . Indeed , so , and has order , acting on by . Non-example: for the abelian group , the maximal torus is itself, , and is trivial; so does not detect anything in the abelian case. The group is finite, and it acts faithfully on . Up to isomorphism it does not depend on , since all maximal tori are conjugate. It is isomorphic to the Weyl group of the root system of , the group generated by the reflections in the roots.
