Definition

Let XX be a complex surface and let p∈Xp \in X be a singular point. The point pp is an ADE singularity, or Du Val singularity, if the germ (X,p)(X, p) is analytically isomorphic to a germ ({f=0},0)(\set{f = 0}, 0) in ℂ3\C^3. Here ff is one of the following polynomials:

  1. AnA_n, for n≥1n \ge 1: f=x2+y2+zn+1f = x^2 + y^2 + z^{n+1}.
  2. DnD_n, for n≥4n \ge 4: f=x2+y2z+zn−1f = x^2 + y^2 z + z^{n-1}.
  3. E6E_6: f=x2+y3+z4f = x^2 + y^3 + z^4.
  4. E7E_7: f=x2+y3+yz3f = x^2 + y^3 + y z^3.
  5. E8E_8: f=x2+y3+z5f = x^2 + y^3 + z^5.

Remarks

Equivalently, the germ is isomorphic to the quotient ℂ2/G\C^2/G at the image of 00, for a nontrivial finite subgroup GG of the special linear group SL(2,ℂ)SL(2, \C). The group is cyclic of order n+1n + 1 for AnA_n, and binary dihedral of order 4(n−2)4(n - 2) for DnD_n. For E6E_6, E7E_7, E8E_8 it is binary tetrahedral, octahedral and icosahedral, of orders 2424, 4848 and 120120. The exceptional curves of the minimal resolution are smooth rational curves with self-intersection −2-2, and their dual graph is the Dynkin diagram of the same name. ADE singularities are rational singularities, and they are exactly the rational double points. Example: G={±1}G = \set{\pm 1} acts on ℂ[u,v]\C[u, v] with invariant ring generated by a=u2a = u^2, b=v2b = v^2, c=uvc = uv, subject to ab=c2ab = c^2. After the linear change a=x+iya = x + iy, b=−(x−iy)b = -(x - iy), c=zc = z, the relation ab−c2=0ab - c^2 = 0 becomes x2+y2+z2=0x^2 + y^2 + z^2 = 0, which is the A1A_1 singularity. Non-example: the cone x3+y3+z3=0x^3 + y^3 + z^3 = 0 has a singular point at 00 of multiplicity 33, while every ADE singularity has multiplicity 22, so it is not an ADE singularity.
