Definition

Let ℏ>0\hbar > 0 be the reduced Planck constant. Let Ω⊆ℝ3\Omega \subseteq \R^3 be an open set, and let AA be a smooth magnetic vector potential on Ω\Omega with zero magnetic field there, ∇×A=0\nabla \times A = 0 on Ω\Omega. Let a quantum particle of charge qq move in Ω\Omega according to the Schrödinger equation with the momentum operator −iℏ∇-i\hbar\nabla replaced by −iℏ∇−qA-i\hbar\nabla - qA. For a closed loop γ\gamma in Ω\Omega, the Aharonov–Bohm phase of γ\gamma is qℏ∮γA⋅dl.\frac{q}{\hbar} \oint_\gamma A \cdot dl. The Aharonov–Bohm effect is the fact that this phase can be nonzero modulo 2π2\pi when Ω\Omega is not simply connected. A nonzero phase then shifts the interference between the parts of the wave function that pass on the two sides of the hole.

Remarks

By Stokes' theorem, the phase is qΦ/ℏq \Phi / \hbar, where Φ\Phi is the magnetic flux through any surface spanned by γ\gamma, including the flux in the excluded region. Since ∇×A=0\nabla \times A = 0, the phase depends only on the homotopy class of γ\gamma in Ω\Omega; it is the holonomy of the flat U(1)U(1) connection given by AA. A gauge change A↦A+∇χA \mapsto A + \nabla \chi does not change it modulo 2π2\pi when eiqχ/ℏe^{iq\chi/\hbar} is single-valued.

Example: an infinite solenoid of radius aa along the zz-axis carrying the flux Φ\Phi. Outside it, in cylindrical coordinates, A=Φ2πreθA = \frac{\Phi}{2 \pi r} e_\theta for r>ar > a. Then (∇×A)z=1rddr(r⋅Φ2πr)=0(\nabla \times A)_z = \frac{1}{r} \frac{d}{dr} \left( r \cdot \frac{\Phi}{2 \pi r} \right) = 0, while a loop once around the axis gives ∮A⋅dl=Φ2πr⋅2πr=Φ\oint A \cdot dl = \frac{\Phi}{2 \pi r} \cdot 2 \pi r = \Phi and the phase qΦ/ℏq \Phi / \hbar.

Non-example: if Ω\Omega is simply connected, then A=∇χA = \nabla \chi on Ω\Omega for a function χ\chi, every loop integral vanishes, and there is no effect. The effect also vanishes when qΦ/ℏq \Phi / \hbar is an integer multiple of 2π2\pi.
