Archimedean equivalence classes
Builds on Linearly ordered groupAbelian group
Definition
Let be a linearly ordered group that is an abelian group. For , let . Two elements are Archimedean equivalent, written , if there are integers with This is an equivalence relation on . Its classes are the Archimedean classes of , and the class of is . For nonzero with , one says that is infinitely larger than if for all .
Remarks
Exactly one of , " is infinitely larger than " and " is infinitely larger than " holds, so the classes of nonzero elements are totally ordered by size. Example: in with the lexicographic order, , since and . Non-example: , since for all , so no multiple of bounds . So with this order has exactly two classes of nonzero elements, those with first coordinate and the others. The group is Archimedean if and only if all its nonzero elements are equivalent. Conventions on the direction of the order of classes differ between texts.
