Definition

Let GG be a linear algebraic group defined over ℚ\Q, together with a faithful representation G↪GLnG \hookrightarrow \mathrm{GL}_n defined over ℚ\Q. Let G(ℤ)=G(ℚ)∩GLn(ℤ)G(\Z) = G(\Q) \cap \mathrm{GL}_n(\Z). A subgroup Γ\Gamma of G(ℚ)G(\Q) is an arithmetic subgroup of GG if it is commensurable with G(ℤ)G(\Z). This means that Γ∩G(ℤ)\Gamma \cap G(\Z) has finite index both in Γ\Gamma and in G(ℤ)G(\Z). An arithmetic group is a group that is an arithmetic subgroup of some such GG.

Remarks

The class of arithmetic subgroups does not depend on the choice of the faithful representation.

Example: the special linear group SLn\mathrm{SL}_n in its standard representation has G(ℤ)=SLn(ℤ)G(\Z) = \mathrm{SL}_n(\Z), which is arithmetic. For an integer N≥1N \ge 1, the congruence subgroup Γ(N)\Gamma(N), the kernel of reduction modulo NN from SLn(ℤ)\mathrm{SL}_n(\Z) to SLn(ℤ/Nℤ)\mathrm{SL}_n(\Z/N\Z), is arithmetic too. Indeed, Γ(N)∩SLn(ℤ)=Γ(N)\Gamma(N) \cap \mathrm{SL}_n(\Z) = \Gamma(N), and its index in SLn(ℤ)\mathrm{SL}_n(\Z) is at most the order of the finite group SLn(ℤ/Nℤ)\mathrm{SL}_n(\Z/N\Z).

Non-example: Γ=SL2(ℤ[1/2])\Gamma = \mathrm{SL}_2(\Z[1/2]) inside SL2(ℚ)\mathrm{SL}_2(\Q). Here Γ∩SL2(ℤ)=SL2(ℤ)\Gamma \cap \mathrm{SL}_2(\Z) = \mathrm{SL}_2(\Z). The matrices dk=diag(2k,2−k)d_k = \mathrm{diag}(2^k, 2^{-k}), k≥0k \ge 0, lie in Γ\Gamma, and dk−1dm∉SL2(ℤ)d_k^{-1} d_m \notin \mathrm{SL}_2(\Z) for k≠mk \ne m. So SL2(ℤ)\mathrm{SL}_2(\Z) has infinite index in Γ\Gamma, and Γ\Gamma is not arithmetic in SL2\mathrm{SL}_2.

Over a number field KK with ring of integers 𝒪K\mathcal{O}_K, one uses G(𝒪K)G(\mathcal{O}_K) in place of G(ℤ)G(\Z); restriction of scalars reduces this case to the one over ℚ\Q.
