Statement

Let L/KL/K be a finite Galois extension of algebraic number fields with Galois group GG. Let C⊆GC \subseteq G be a conjugacy class. For a nonzero prime ideal 𝔭\mathfrak{p} of 𝒪K\mathcal{O}_K unramified in LL, let Frob𝔭\mathrm{Frob}_{\mathfrak{p}} be its Frobenius conjugacy class, and let N(𝔭)N(\mathfrak{p}) be its norm. Then lim⁡x→∞#{𝔭:N(𝔭)≤x, 𝔭 unramified in L, Frob𝔭=C}#{𝔭:N(𝔭)≤x}=∣C∣∣G∣.\lim_{x \to \infty} \frac{\#\set{\mathfrak{p} : N(\mathfrak{p}) \le x, \ \mathfrak{p} \text{ unramified in } L, \ \mathrm{Frob}_{\mathfrak{p}} = C}}{\#\set{\mathfrak{p} : N(\mathfrak{p}) \le x}} = \frac{\abs{C}}{\abs{G}}.

Remarks

The proof first treats abelian extensions, where the statement reduces, through class field theory, to the non-vanishing at s=1s = 1 of Hecke LL-functions, as in Dirichlet's theorem on arithmetic progressions. The general case is reduced to the cyclic case by passing to the fixed field of the cyclic subgroup generated by an element of CC. Chebotarev's original proof also adjoins roots of unity to reduce to cyclotomic extensions.

Example: for K=ℚK = \Q and L=ℚ(ζn)L = \Q(\zeta_n), the group GG is (ℤ/nℤ)×(\Z/n\Z)^\times and Frobp\mathrm{Frob}_p is the class of pp modulo nn. The theorem gives that the primes are equidistributed among the φ(n)\varphi(n) classes modulo nn coprime to nn, which is Dirichlet's theorem in its density form.

Example: taking C={1}C = \set{1}, the primes of KK that split completely in LL have density 1/[L:K]1/[L : K]. For L=ℚ(i)L = \Q(i), half the primes split, namely those ≡1(mod4)\equiv 1 \pmod 4.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem generalises Dirichlet's theorem on arithmetic progressions from cyclotomic extensions of ℚ\Q to all Galois extensions. It is used to show that a Galois extension is determined by the set of primes that split completely in it. It also gives the density of primes for which a polynomial has a given factorisation pattern modulo pp, by looking at the cycle types in its Galois group. Effective versions with explicit error terms depend on zero-free regions of Dedekind zeta functions.
