Definition

Let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be an open set, and let C∞(Ω)C^\infty(\Omega) be the algebra of smooth functions on Ω\Omega. Let ℰ(Ω)\mathcal{E}(\Omega) be the algebra of families (uε)ε∈(0,1](u_\varepsilon)_{\varepsilon \in (0,1]} in C∞(Ω)C^\infty(\Omega), with pointwise operations. For a compact set K⊆ΩK \subseteq \Omega and a multi-index α\alpha, let pK,α(u)=sup⁡x∈K∣∂αu(x)∣p_{K,\alpha}(u) = \sup_{x \in K} \abs{\partial^\alpha u(x)}.

  1. A family (uε)(u_\varepsilon) is moderate if for each KK and α\alpha there is N≥0N \ge 0 with pK,α(uε)=O(ε−N)p_{K,\alpha}(u_\varepsilon) = O(\varepsilon^{-N}) as ε→0\varepsilon \to 0.
  2. A family (uε)(u_\varepsilon) is negligible if for each KK, α\alpha and m≥0m \ge 0, pK,α(uε)=O(εm)p_{K,\alpha}(u_\varepsilon) = O(\varepsilon^{m}) as ε→0\varepsilon \to 0.

The moderate families form a subalgebra ℰM(Ω)\mathcal{E}_M(\Omega), and the negligible families form an ideal 𝒩(Ω)\mathcal{N}(\Omega) of it. The special Colombeau algebra on Ω\Omega is the quotient algebra 𝒢(Ω)=ℰM(Ω)/𝒩(Ω)\mathcal{G}(\Omega) = \mathcal{E}_M(\Omega) / \mathcal{N}(\Omega).

Remarks

𝒢(Ω)\mathcal{G}(\Omega) is a commutative associative algebra, and the partial derivatives ∂j\partial_j, applied to each uεu_\varepsilon, pass to the quotient and satisfy the Leibniz rule. A smooth function ff embeds as the class of the constant family uε=fu_\varepsilon = f, and this embedding keeps products. On ℝn\R^n, distributions embed by convolution with a rescaled mollifier ρε(x)=ε−nρ(x/ε)\rho_\varepsilon(x) = \varepsilon^{-n} \rho(x / \varepsilon), where ρ\rho is a Schwartz function with ∫ρ=1\int \rho = 1 and all higher moments 00. This embedding depends on the choice of ρ\rho, and the moment condition makes it agree with the embedding of smooth functions. The Schwartz impossibility theorem shows that the product of continuous functions cannot also be kept; in 𝒢\mathcal{G} it is kept only up to association.

Example: on ℝ\R, let ρ\rho be smooth with compact support and ∫ρ=1\int \rho = 1, and let uε(x)=ε−1ρ(x/ε)u_\varepsilon(x) = \varepsilon^{-1} \rho(x / \varepsilon). Then sup⁡∣∂αuε∣=ε−1−αsup⁡∣ρ(α)∣\sup \abs{\partial^\alpha u_\varepsilon} = \varepsilon^{-1-\alpha} \sup \abs{\rho^{(\alpha)}}, so the family is moderate. Its class is associated with the delta: ∫uεφ→φ(0)\int u_\varepsilon \varphi \to \varphi(0) for every test function φ\varphi. Its square is the class of (uε2)(u_\varepsilon^2).

Non-example: the constant family uε=e1/εu_\varepsilon = e^{1/\varepsilon} is not moderate, since e1/εe^{1/\varepsilon} grows faster than every power ε−N\varepsilon^{-N}. So it defines no element of 𝒢(ℝ)\mathcal{G}(\R).
