Functional analysis Distributions and generalized functions Theorem

Schwartz impossibility theorem

Builds on Dirac delta function

Statement

Let π’Ÿβ€²(ℝ)\mathcal{D}'(\R) be the space of distributions on ℝ\R, the dual of the space of test functions. Let C(ℝ)C(\R) be the space of continuous functions, viewed as distributions. There is no associative algebra (π’œ,∘)(\mathcal{A}, \circ) over ℝ\R with these properties:

  1. π’Ÿβ€²(ℝ)\mathcal{D}'(\R) is a linear subspace of π’œ\mathcal{A}, and the constant function 11 is the unit of π’œ\mathcal{A}.
  2. There is a linear map D ⁣:π’œβ†’π’œD \colon \mathcal{A} \to \mathcal{A} with D(u∘v)=(Du)∘v+u∘(Dv)D(u \circ v) = (Du) \circ v + u \circ (Dv) for all u,vβˆˆπ’œu, v \in \mathcal{A}.
  3. The restriction of DD to π’Ÿβ€²(ℝ)\mathcal{D}'(\R) is the derivative of distributions.
  4. The restriction of ∘\circ to C(ℝ)Γ—C(ℝ)C(\R) \times C(\R) is the pointwise product of functions.

Remarks

The proof computes inside π’œ\mathcal{A} with continuous functions such as xx, xlog⁑∣xβˆ£βˆ’xx \log\abs{x} - x and their derivatives in π’Ÿβ€²(ℝ)\mathcal{D}'(\R). The Leibniz rule and the pointwise product give identities for products like x∘δx \circ \delta, where Ξ΄\delta is the Dirac delta. Associativity then leads to a contradiction such as Ξ΄=0\delta = 0.

So distributions cannot be multiplied in a way that keeps all the rules of calculus. Colombeau algebras keep clauses 1, 2 and 3 and weaken clause 4: they keep the pointwise product of smooth functions only.

Going deeper

For a student

Nonlinear equations with distributional data, for example in shock waves or in quantum field theory, need products of distributions. The theorem shows which rule must be given up. In the Colombeau algebra the product agrees with the usual one on smooth functions, and on continuous functions only up to association, a weak equality tested against test functions.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
