Combinatorial species

Builds on Finite setExponential generating function

Definition

Let 𝔹\mathbb{B} be the category whose objects are the finite sets and whose morphisms are the bijections. A combinatorial species is a functor F ⁣:𝔹→𝔹F \colon \mathbb{B} \to \mathbb{B}. Thus FF assigns:

  1. to each finite set UU a finite set F[U]F[U], whose elements are the FF-structures on UU;
  2. to each bijection σ ⁣:Uβ†’V\sigma \colon U \to V a bijection F[Οƒ] ⁣:F[U]β†’F[V]F[\sigma] \colon F[U] \to F[V], the transport along Οƒ\sigma;
  3. in such a way that F[id⁑U]=id⁑F[U]F[\id_U] = \id_{F[U]} and F[Ο„βˆ˜Οƒ]=F[Ο„]∘F[Οƒ]F[\tau \circ \sigma] = F[\tau] \circ F[\sigma] for bijections σ ⁣:Uβ†’V\sigma \colon U \to V and τ ⁣:Vβ†’W\tau \colon V \to W.

Remarks

The exponential generating function of FF is F(x)=βˆ‘nβ‰₯0∣F[{1,…,n}]βˆ£β€‰xnn!F(x) = \sum_{n \ge 0} \abs{F[\set{1, \ldots, n}]}\, \frac{x^n}{n!}.

Example: the species LL of linear orders assigns to UU the set of total orders on UU. A bijection Οƒ\sigma transports an order u1<β‹―<unu_1 < \cdots < u_n to Οƒ(u1)<β‹―<Οƒ(un)\sigma(u_1) < \cdots < \sigma(u_n), and the functor rules hold. Since ∣L[{1,…,n}]∣=n!\abs{L[\set{1, \ldots, n}]} = n!, its generating function is 11βˆ’x\frac{1}{1 - x}. The species EE of sets, with E[U]={U}E[U] = \set{U}, has generating function exe^x.

Non-example: let F[U]={U}F[U] = \set{U} if UβŠ†β„•U \subseteq \N and F[U]=βˆ…F[U] = \emptyset otherwise. For a bijection Οƒ\sigma from {1}\set{1} to {a}\set{a} with aβˆ‰β„•a \notin \N, clause 2 needs a bijection from a one-element set to the empty set, which does not exist. So FF is not a species.

Sum, product, composition and derivative of species correspond to the same operations on exponential generating functions. Some authors let FF take values in the category of finite sets and all functions; this gives the same notion, since a functor sends bijections to bijections.
