Definition
Let be an algebraically closed field. Let be a projective variety of dimension , and let be its codimension. is a complete intersection if its homogeneous ideal is generated by homogeneous polynomials. In the same way, an affine variety of dimension is a complete intersection if its ideal is generated by polynomials.
Remarks
By Krull's principal ideal theorem, every irreducible component of a nonempty set has dimension at least . So is the least number of generators that can have. If and is generated by homogeneous polynomials , then is a regular sequence in . In both the affine and the projective case, the local rings of a complete intersection are complete intersection rings. A weaker notion is a set-theoretic complete intersection: as sets, without asking that the generate .
Example: if is an irreducible homogeneous polynomial of positive degree, the hypersurface has dimension and ideal , so it is a complete intersection. A linear subspace defined by independent linear forms is a complete intersection of codimension .
Non-example: the twisted cubic , the image of the Veronese embedding , has dimension and codimension . Its ideal contains no nonzero linear form, because are linearly independent. Its quadrics form the -dimensional space spanned by , and . Indeed, this space is the kernel of the surjective map from the quadrics in to the forms of degree in . A set of homogeneous generators must therefore contain at least quadrics, so is not a complete intersection.
