Definition

For n≥0n \ge 0 let Δn\Delta^n be the standard nn-simplex with ordered vertices e0,…,ene_0, \dots, e_n, and let Δ˚n\mathring{\Delta}^n be its interior. For 0≤i≤n0 \le i \le n with n≥1n \ge 1, let δi ⁣:Δn−1→Δn\delta^i \colon \Delta^{n-1} \to \Delta^n be the affine map onto the ii-th face that sends e0,…,en−1e_0, \dots, e_{n-1} in order to the vertices e0,…,ei^,…,ene_0, \dots, \widehat{e_i}, \dots, e_n. Let XX be a topological space. A Δ\Delta-complex structure on XX is a family of continuous maps σα ⁣:Δnα→X\sigma_\alpha \colon \Delta^{n_\alpha} \to X such that:

  1. Each σα\sigma_\alpha is injective on Δ˚nα\mathring{\Delta}^{n_\alpha}, and each point of XX lies in σα(Δ˚nα)\sigma_\alpha(\mathring{\Delta}^{n_\alpha}) for exactly one α\alpha.
  2. For each α\alpha with nα≥1n_\alpha \ge 1 and each ii, the map σα∘δi\sigma_\alpha \circ \delta^i is σβ\sigma_\beta for some β\beta with nβ=nα−1n_\beta = n_\alpha - 1.
  3. A subset A⊆XA \subseteq X is open if and only if σα−1(A)\sigma_\alpha^{-1}(A) is open in Δnα\Delta^{n_\alpha} for every α\alpha.

A Δ\Delta-complex is a space with a Δ\Delta-complex structure.

Remarks

Every Δ\Delta-complex is a CW complex whose cells are the open simplices σα(Δ˚nα)\sigma_\alpha(\mathring{\Delta}^{n_\alpha}). The combinatorial data of a Δ\Delta-complex, the sets of nn-simplices with the face maps did_i given by clause 2, form a semi-simplicial set.

Example: the circle S1S^1 with one 00-simplex σ0 ⁣:Δ0→S1\sigma_0 \colon \Delta^0 \to S^1 onto a point pp and one 11-simplex σ1 ⁣:Δ1→S1\sigma_1 \colon \Delta^1 \to S^1 that wraps once around, sending both ends to pp. Clause 1 holds since σ1\sigma_1 is injective on the open interval and misses only pp. Clause 2 holds since both faces of σ1\sigma_1 equal σ0\sigma_0, and clause 3 holds since S1S^1 is a quotient of Δ1\Delta^1.

Non-example: the circle with one 00-simplex at pp and one 11-simplex that wraps twice around fails clause 1, since the map is not injective on the open interval.
