Definition

Let XX be a Banach space. A contraction semigroup on XX is a strongly continuous semigroup (T(t))t≥0(T(t))_{t \ge 0} of bounded operators on XX such that ∥T(t)∥≤1for all t≥0,\norm{T(t)} \le 1 \quad \text{for all } t \ge 0, where ∥⋅∥\norm{\cdot} is the operator norm.

Remarks

Example: on Lp(ℝ)L^p(\R) with 1≤p<∞1 \le p < \infty, let (T(t)f)(s)=f(s+t)(T(t)f)(s) = f(s + t). Each T(t)T(t) preserves the LpL^p norm, so ∥T(t)∥=1\norm{T(t)} = 1, and t↦T(t)ft \mapsto T(t)f is continuous for every ff, so this is a contraction semigroup.

Non-example: on ℂ\C, the semigroup T(t)z=etzT(t)z = e^{t}z is strongly continuous, but ∥T(t)∥=et>1\norm{T(t)} = e^{t} > 1 for t>0t > 0.

The generator of a contraction semigroup is dissipative. Some authors write C0C_0 contraction semigroup to stress strong continuity.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
