Decidable language
Builds on Turing machineFormal language
Definition
Let be an alphabet and let be a formal language. A Turing machine with input alphabet , an accepting halting state and a rejecting halting state decides if both conditions hold.
- halts on every input .
- halts in the accepting state exactly when .
The language is decidable, or recursive, if some Turing machine decides it.
Remarks
Example: over is decidable. A machine first rejects strings not of the form . Then it repeatedly crosses out the first and the last , and rejects if one kind runs out before the other. Each round shortens the remaining string, so the machine halts on every input, and it accepts exactly the strings in . Non-example: the halting language is not decidable, by the undecidability of the halting problem. A machine that simulates on satisfies clause 2 but not clause 1, since it runs forever when does. Decidable languages are closed under complement, union, intersection, concatenation and Kleene star. Under a computable bijection between and , they correspond to the computable sets.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
