Definition

Let HH be a complex Hilbert space, and let AA be a symmetric operator on HH with dense domain and adjoint A∗A^*. The deficiency subspaces of AA are the closed subspaces K+=ker⁡(A∗−iI),K−=ker⁡(A∗+iI)K_+ = \ker(A^* - iI), \qquad K_- = \ker(A^* + iI) of HH, where ker⁡\ker denotes the kernel. The deficiency indices of AA are the Hilbert dimensions n+=dim⁡K+n_+ = \dim K_+ and n−=dim⁡K−n_- = \dim K_-, which are cardinal numbers, possibly infinite.

Remarks

Equivalently, K±K_\pm is the orthogonal complement of the image of A±iIA \pm iI. Some authors exchange the names of K+K_+ and K−K_-; the pair (n+,n−)(n_+, n_-) is then reversed. The operator AA is essentially self-adjoint if and only if n+=n−=0n_+ = n_- = 0. Example: on L2([0,1])L^2([0,1]), let A=−i d/dxA = -i \, d/dx on the smooth functions with compact support in (0,1)(0,1). Then A∗A^* is −i d/dx-i \, d/dx on the Sobolev space H1([0,1])H^1([0,1]), and A∗u=±iuA^* u = \pm i u means u′=∓uu' = \mp u. So K+K_+ is spanned by e−xe^{-x} and K−K_- by exe^{x}, and (n+,n−)=(1,1)(n_+, n_-) = (1, 1). Example with unequal indices: on L2([0,∞))L^2([0, \infty)), the same construction gives K+K_+ spanned by e−xe^{-x}, while exe^{x} is not square integrable, so (n+,n−)=(1,0)(n_+, n_-) = (1, 0). Non-example: the deficiency indices are not defined for an operator that is not densely defined, because then the adjoint is not a well-defined operator.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
