Statement

Let ff be an entire function of order ρ\rho. Call a∈ℂa \in \C a finite asymptotic value of ff if there is a continuous curve γ ⁣:[0,1)→ℂ\gamma \colon [0, 1) \to \C with γ(t)→∞\gamma(t) \to \infty and f(γ(t))→af(\gamma(t)) \to a as t→1t \to 1. If ff has n≥1n \ge 1 distinct finite asymptotic values, then n≤2ρn \le 2\rho.

Remarks

Between two curves along which ff tends to different finite limits, ff must be unbounded, so ff has at least nn separate regions near ∞\infty where ∣f∣\abs{f} is large. Ahlfors's proof bounds the growth of ff in such regions with an estimate for conformal maps of strip-like domains. This estimate is now called the Ahlfors distortion theorem. It is proved by the length–area method, which later grew into the theory of extremal length. For example, eze^z has order 11 and the single finite asymptotic value 00, reached along the negative real axis, so 1≤21 \le 2. For n=1n = 1 the theorem says that an entire function of order less than 1/21/2 has no finite asymptotic value.

For a student

The order is defined by ρ=lim sup⁡r→∞log⁡log⁡M(r)/log⁡r\rho = \limsup_{r \to \infty} \log \log M(r)/\log r, where M(r)M(r) is the maximum of ∣f∣\abs{f} on ∣z∣=r\abs{z} = r. The case n=1n = 1 is consistent with the cos⁡πρ\cos \pi\rho theorem, which shows that functions of order less than 1/21/2 are large on a sequence of whole circles. The method of the proof, through extremal length and conformal invariants, became a central tool of geometric function theory.
