Derivation
Builds on Commutative ringLinear map
Definition
Let be a commutative ring and let be an associative algebra over . A derivation of over is a map such that:
- is -linear: and for all and .
- for all (the Leibniz rule).
Remarks
Example: let be a field and , and let be the formal derivative, . It is -linear, and on monomials , which gives clause 2 by linearity. Non-example: on with of characteristic , the second derivative is linear but fails clause 2, since while . Consequences: , hence for all , and when is commutative. If and are derivations, then is a derivation. More generally, for an -bimodule , a derivation is an -linear map with . A derivation of a ring without a chosen base ring is a derivation over , that is, an additive map with the Leibniz rule.
