Definition
A differential field is a field with a map such that:
- for all .
- for all .
So is a derivation of over . The set is the field of constants of .
Remarks
The field of constants is a subfield of : clauses 1 and 2 give , and for the rule holds. Example: with is a differential field; clauses 1 and 2 are the sum and product rules, and the derivative of a rational function is a rational function. Its field of constants is . Example: every field with is a differential field, with . Non-example: any field with fails clause 2, since while , and in every field. A field with finitely many commuting derivations is a partial differential field; a differential field in the sense above is also called an ordinary differential field.
