Definition
Let be a differential field. Let be a differential field that is a field extension of , with derivation equal to on . The differential Galois group is the group, under composition, of the field automorphisms such that:
- for all .
- for all .
Differential Galois theory is the study of these groups. The main case is a Picard–Vessiot extension of for a linear differential equation. There the field of constants of is assumed algebraically closed of characteristic .
Remarks
Example: let with and , the Picard–Vessiot extension of . An element of satisfies , so has derivative and is a nonzero constant . Each gives such a , because is transcendental over , so . Non-example: let with and with ; the field automorphism of over with satisfies clause 1 but fails clause 2, since while . The elements of are the maps with , so this group is isomorphic to . For a Picard–Vessiot extension for an equation of order , the group acts on the -dimensional space of solutions over the constants and is a Zariski-closed subgroup of .
