Definition

Let GG be a unimodular locally compact group with a Haar measure dgdg. Let λ\lambda be the left regular representation of GG on L2(G)L^2(G), given by (λ(g)f)(x)=f(g−1x)(\lambda(g) f)(x) = f(g^{-1} x). Let π\pi be an irreducible unitary representation of GG on a Hilbert space HH. Then π\pi is a discrete series representation if it is unitarily equivalent to a subrepresentation of λ\lambda.

Remarks

For u,v∈Hu, v \in H, the matrix coefficient of π\pi is the function g↦⟨π(g)u,v⟩g \mapsto \ip{\pi(g) u}{v}. Equivalently, π\pi is in the discrete series if and only if some nonzero matrix coefficient lies in L2(G)L^2(G). Then every matrix coefficient lies in L2(G)L^2(G).

Example: let GG be a compact group, with Haar measure of total mass 11. Each matrix coefficient of a unitary representation is continuous and bounded by ∥u∥∥v∥\norm{u} \norm{v}, so it lies in L2(G)L^2(G). So every irreducible unitary representation of GG is in the discrete series.

Non-example: the irreducible unitary representations of G=ℝG = \R are the characters x↦eixtx \mapsto e^{ixt} with t∈ℝt \in \R. Each matrix coefficient has constant absolute value, so it is not square-integrable on ℝ\R. So ℝ\R has no discrete series, and L2(ℝ)L^2(\R) decomposes as a continuous direct integral by Fourier analysis.

For groups with non-compact center, such as GLn(ℝ)\mathrm{GL}_n(\R), one asks instead that the matrix coefficients be square-integrable modulo the center. For connected semisimple GG with finite center and maximal compact subgroup KK, discrete series exist if and only if rank⁡G=rank⁡K\rank G = \rank K, by a theorem of Harish-Chandra. For example, SL2(ℝ)\mathrm{SL}_2(\R) has discrete series, while SL2(ℂ)\mathrm{SL}_2(\C) has none.
