Definition

Let (X,Σ,μ)(X, \Sigma, \mu) be a measure space, let 𝕂\mathbb{K} be ℝ\R or ℂ\C, and let 1≤p<∞1 \le p < \infty. Let ℒp(μ)\mathcal{L}^p(\mu) be the set of measurable functions f ⁣:X→𝕂f \colon X \to \mathbb{K} with ∫X∣f∣p dμ<∞\int_X \abs{f}^p \, d\mu < \infty, an integral of a non-negative function. Call f∼gf \sim g when f=gf = g almost everywhere. The space Lp(μ)L^p(\mu) is the set of equivalence classes of ℒp(μ)\mathcal{L}^p(\mu) under ∼\sim, with pointwise operations on representatives. Its norm is ∥f∥p=(∫X∣f∣p dμ)1/p.\norm{f}_p = \Big( \int_X \abs{f}^p \, d\mu \Big)^{1/p}.

Remarks

Example: on ℝ\R with Lebesgue measure, f(x)=e−x2f(x) = e^{-x^2} lies in LpL^p for every pp, since ∫e−px2 dx=π/p<∞\int e^{-p x^2} \, dx = \sqrt{\pi / p} < \infty.

Non-example: g(x)=1/(1+∣x∣)g(x) = 1 / (1 + \abs{x}) on ℝ\R is in L2L^2 but not in L1L^1. Indeed ∫ℝ(1+∣x∣)−1 dx=∞\int_\R (1 + \abs{x})^{-1} \, dx = \infty, while ∫ℝ(1+∣x∣)−2 dx=2\int_\R (1 + \abs{x})^{-2} \, dx = 2.

The operations and the norm do not depend on the representatives. The map ∥⋅∥p\norm{\cdot}_p is a norm by the Minkowski inequality, and ∥f∥p=0\norm{f}_p = 0 forces f=0f = 0 almost everywhere. With this norm Lp(μ)L^p(\mu) is a Banach space, by the Riesz–Fischer theorem. For p=∞p = \infty one uses the essential supremum instead, which gives the space L-infinity. With the counting measure on ℕ\N, LpL^p is the sequence space ℓp\ell^p.
