E-infinity operad

Definition
An operad in topological spaces consists of spaces for and the following data. There is a right action of the symmetric group on each and an identity element . There are continuous composition maps which are associative, unital and equivariant in the standard sense. An operad is an operad if, for every :
- the space is contractible, and
- the action of on is free.
Remarks
Often one also asks the action to be nice enough that is a principal -bundle, so that is a model of .
Example: the linear isometries operad, with the space of linear isometric embeddings and composition by composing maps. Each is contractible, and acts by permuting the copies of . The action is free: an isometric embedding sends the summands to mutually orthogonal subspaces, so it is not invariant under a nontrivial permutation.
Example: the BarrattβEccles operad has , which is contractible with a free -action.
Non-example: the commutative operad, with a single point for every , satisfies clause 1 but not clause 2 when , since fixes the point. Its algebras are strictly commutative monoids, which are too restrictive in homotopy theory.
