Description
Let be an abelian group. The Eilenberg–MacLane spectrum is the spectrum with , an Eilenberg–MacLane space, for . Its structure maps are adjoint to weak homotopy equivalences , so is an -spectrum. Its homotopy groups are and for , and these properties determine up to isomorphism in the stable homotopy category.
Remarks
The spectrum represents ordinary singular cohomology with coefficients in : for a CW complex and , . It also represents homology: . For prime, the graded ring of stable self-maps is the mod Steenrod algebra. If is a commutative ring, the product of makes a commutative ring spectrum.
