Definition

Work in the stable homotopy category, with smash product ∧\wedge, unit the sphere spectrum SS, and twist isomorphism τ ⁣:E∧E→E∧E\tau \colon E \wedge E \to E \wedge E. A ring spectrum is a spectrum EE with morphisms μ ⁣:E∧E→E,η ⁣:S→E\mu \colon E \wedge E \to E, \qquad \eta \colon S \to E such that:

  1. (associativity) μ∘(μ∧id⁡E)=μ∘(id⁡E∧μ)\mu \circ (\mu \wedge \id_E) = \mu \circ (\id_E \wedge \mu) as morphisms E∧E∧E→EE \wedge E \wedge E \to E;
  2. (unit) μ∘(η∧id⁡E)\mu \circ (\eta \wedge \id_E) and μ∘(id⁡E∧η)\mu \circ (\id_E \wedge \eta) are the canonical isomorphisms S∧E→ES \wedge E \to E and E∧S→EE \wedge S \to E.

The ring spectrum is commutative if moreover μ∘τ=μ\mu \circ \tau = \mu. In other words, a ring spectrum is a monoid in the stable homotopy category.

Remarks

For a ring spectrum EE, the coefficient group π∗(E)\pi_*(E) is a graded ring. For a space XX, the generalized cohomology theory E∗(X)E^*(X) is a graded ring under the cup product induced by μ\mu and the diagonal of XX.

Example: for a commutative ring RR, the Eilenberg–MacLane spectrum HRHR is a commutative ring spectrum, with μ\mu induced by the multiplication of RR. It gives the usual cup product on H∗(X;R)H^*(X; R). The sphere spectrum, complex K-theory KUKU and complex cobordism MUMU are other commutative ring spectra.

Non-example: H(ℚ/ℤ)H(\Q/\Z) is not a ring spectrum. A unit and multiplication would make π0=ℚ/ℤ\pi_0 = \Q/\Z a ring with identity 11. If 11 has additive order nn, then nx=(n⋅1)x=0n x = (n \cdot 1) x = 0 for all xx, which fails for an element of order 2n2n.

These axioms hold only up to homotopy. Ring spectra whose associativity and commutativity hold up to all higher coherent homotopies are called A∞A_\infty and E∞E_\infty ring spectra. They are modelled as monoids in symmetric spectra or orthogonal spectra.
