Electric charge
Builds on Triple integralDirac delta function
Definition
A system of point charges in is a finite list of distinct points together with real numbers . The number is the charge at , and is the total charge. A continuous charge distribution is an integrable function , the charge density. The charge in a bounded region is the triple integral and the total charge is .
Remarks
Example: the density on the unit ball and outside has total charge , the constant times the volume of the ball. Non-example: the function for all is not a charge distribution with a total charge, since it is not integrable over . A point charge at is often written as the density , with the Dirac delta. Both cases are signed measures on , and many texts define a charge distribution as a finite signed Borel measure.
