Definition

Let ε0,μ0>0\varepsilon_0, \mu_0 > 0 be the vacuum permittivity and permeability, and let c=1/ε0μ0c = 1/\sqrt{\varepsilon_0 \mu_0}. The electromagnetic wave equation for a vector field u ⁣:ℝ3×ℝ→ℝ3u \colon \R^3 \times \R \to \R^3 is 1c2∂2u∂t2−Δu=0,\frac{1}{c^2} \frac{\partial^2 u}{\partial t^2} - \Delta u = 0, where the Laplacian Δ\Delta in the space variable acts on each component. Let (E,B)(E, B) be a twice differentiable solution of the source-free Maxwell's equations. Then the electric field u=Eu = E and the magnetic field u=Bu = B both satisfy this equation.

Remarks

Derivation: from ∇×E=−∂tB\nabla \times E = -\partial_t B and ∇×B=1c2∂tE\nabla \times B = \frac{1}{c^2} \partial_t E one gets ∇×(∇×E)=−1c2∂t2E\nabla \times (\nabla \times E) = -\frac{1}{c^2} \partial_t^2 E, and ∇×(∇×E)=∇(∇⋅E)−ΔE=−ΔE\nabla \times (\nabla \times E) = \nabla (\nabla \cdot E) - \Delta E = -\Delta E because ∇⋅E=0\nabla \cdot E = 0. The same steps give the equation for BB. With charges and currents one gets the inhomogeneous electromagnetic wave equations instead. The converse is false: a pair of solutions of the wave equation need not solve Maxwell's equations, which also require zero divergence and the coupling between EE and BB. In a linear, homogeneous and isotropic medium with permittivity ε\varepsilon and permeability μ\mu, cc is replaced by 1/εμ1/\sqrt{\varepsilon \mu}.

Example: u(x,y,z,t)=(0,cos⁡(kx−ωt),0)u(x, y, z, t) = (0, \cos(kx - \omega t), 0) with k>0k > 0 and ω=ck\omega = ck is a solution, since 1c2∂t2uy=−ω2c2uy=−k2uy=Δuy\frac{1}{c^2} \partial_t^2 u_y = -\frac{\omega^2}{c^2} u_y = -k^2 u_y = \Delta u_y.

Non-example: the same field with ω=2ck\omega = 2ck is not a solution, since then 1c2∂t2uy−Δuy=−3k2uy≠0\frac{1}{c^2} \partial_t^2 u_y - \Delta u_y = -3 k^2 u_y \neq 0.
