Definition

Let X1,X2,…X_1, X_2, \dots be independent and identically distributed real random variables with cumulative distribution function FF. For n≥1n \ge 1, the empirical distribution function is Fn(x)=1n∑i=1n𝟏{Xi≤x},x∈ℝ.F_n(x) = \frac{1}{n} \sum_{i=1}^{n} \mathbf{1}\{X_i \le x\}, \qquad x \in \R. The empirical process is the stochastic process indexed by x∈ℝx \in \R given by Gn(x)=n (Fn(x)−F(x)).G_n(x) = \sqrt{n}\,\bigl(F_n(x) - F(x)\bigr).

Remarks

For each fixed xx, nFn(x)n F_n(x) is binomial with parameters nn and F(x)F(x). So E[Gn(x)]=0E[G_n(x)] = 0 and Var⁡(Gn(x))=F(x)(1−F(x))\operatorname{Var}(G_n(x)) = F(x)(1 - F(x)), and by the central limit theorem Gn(x)G_n(x) converges in distribution to a normal law with these parameters. For the uniform law on [0,1][0, 1], Donsker's theorem says that GnG_n converges in distribution, as a random function, to a Brownian bridge. A non-example: if Xi=X1X_i = X_1 for all ii, the variables are not independent, Fn(x)=𝟏{X1≤x}F_n(x) = \mathbf{1}\{X_1 \le x\} for all nn, and n(Fn−F)\sqrt{n}(F_n - F) does not have the behaviour above. More generally, for a probability measure PP and a class ℱ\mathcal{F} of functions, the empirical process indexed by ℱ\mathcal{F} is f↦n(1n∑i=1nf(Xi)−∫f dP)f \mapsto \sqrt{n}\bigl(\frac{1}{n}\sum_{i=1}^n f(X_i) - \int f \, dP\bigr); the case above takes the indicator functions 𝟏(−∞,x]\mathbf{1}_{(-\infty, x]}.
