Definition
Let be a family of finite sets given by a combinatorial rule, such as the subsets of or the trees with vertices. Enumerative combinatorics is the branch of combinatorics that determines the counting function . An answer is one of the following:
- an explicit formula for ;
- a recurrence relation that computes from earlier values;
- a closed form for a generating function of the sequence ;
- an asymptotic estimate of as .
Remarks
Example: let be the set of subsets of with no two consecutive elements. A set in either avoids , or contains and avoids . This gives the recurrence , with and , so is the Fibonacci number .
Non-example: the question whether a finite projective plane of order exists is a question of existence, not of counting. It belongs to the theory of combinatorial designs.
The parameter may be replaced by several parameters, as in the binomial coefficient .
