Definition
Let be an open set and let . The incompressible Euler equations are the system for an unknown vector field , the velocity, and an unknown function , the pressure. Here is the gradient of in , is the divergence of , and has components . The density is normalised to . On a bounded domain one adds the boundary condition , where is the outer unit normal.
Remarks
Example: on , the rigid rotation with pressure is a solution. Indeed , and .
Non-example: is not a solution for any pressure, because .
The compressible Euler equations have the density and the pressure as further unknowns: together with an energy equation or an equation of state that relates to . They form a system of hyperbolic conservation laws, whose solutions can develop shock waves.
