Galois connection
Builds on Partial orderMonotone function
Definition
Let and be partially ordered sets. A (monotone) Galois connection between and is a pair of maps and such that, for all and , The map is the lower adjoint and is the upper adjoint of the connection.
Remarks
Let be the inclusion and the floor function. Then if and only if , so is a Galois connection. On , the pair , is not a Galois connection: for and , holds but fails. In a Galois connection both maps are monotone, and , and and . Each adjoint determines the other: is the greatest with . The lower adjoint preserves all existing suprema, and the upper adjoint preserves all existing infima. An antitone Galois connection uses order-reversing maps with if and only if ; it is a monotone connection between and the dual of .
