Generalised eigenspace

Definition

Let FF be a field, let VV be a vector space over FF, let T ⁣:V→VT \colon V \to V be an endomorphism, and let λ∈F\lambda \in F. The generalised eigenspace of TT for λ\lambda is Vλ={v∈V:(T−λid⁡V)k(v)=0 for some k≥1}.V_\lambda = \{v \in V : (T - \lambda \id_V)^k (v) = 0 \text{ for some } k \ge 1\}.

Remarks

It is a TT-invariant subspace that contains the eigenspace EλE_\lambda. If dim⁡V=n\dim V = n is finite, then Vλ=ker⁡(T−λid⁡V)nV_\lambda = \ker (T - \lambda \id_V)^n. Its dimension is the algebraic multiplicity of λ\lambda, in finite dimensions. Its nonzero elements are the generalised eigenvectors for λ\lambda.

Explanations

L1 human

The generalised eigenspace is a larger version of the eigenspace. It contains the vectors that become zero after we apply T−λid⁡T - \lambda \id several times. These spaces always fill the space over C\C, even when the eigenspaces do not.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 8 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
