Generalised eigenvector

Definition

Let FF be a field, let VV be a vector space over FF, let T ⁣:V→VT \colon V \to V be an endomorphism, and let λ∈F\lambda \in F. A generalised eigenvector of TT for λ\lambda is a vector v∈Vv \in V with v≠0v \ne 0 and (T−λid⁡V)k(v)=0(T - \lambda \id_V)^k (v) = 0 for some integer k≥1k \ge 1. The least such kk is the rank of the generalised eigenvector.

Remarks

The generalised eigenvectors of rank 11 are the eigenvectors. If a generalised eigenvector for λ\lambda exists, then λ\lambda is an eigenvalue. For A=(1101)A = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 1 \\ 0 & 1 \end{pmatrix}, the vector e2e_2 is a generalised eigenvector for 11 of rank 22, and it is not an eigenvector.

Explanations

L1 human

Some matrices do not have enough eigenvectors to make a basis. Generalised eigenvectors fill the gap: they reach zero after several applications of T−λid⁡T - \lambda \id instead of one. They are the building blocks of the Jordan normal form.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 7 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
