Statement

Let qq be a power of a prime pp, and let ℓ≠p\ell \ne p be another prime. Let XX be a separated algebraic variety over the finite field 𝔽q\F_q. Let Xˉ=X×𝔽q𝔽ˉq\bar{X} = X \times_{\F_q} \bar{\F}_q, where 𝔽ˉq\bar{\F}_q is an algebraic closure of 𝔽q\F_q. Let Hci(Xˉ,ℚℓ)H^i_c(\bar{X}, \Q_\ell) be the ℓ-adic cohomology of Xˉ\bar{X} with compact support. Let FF be the endomorphism of it induced by the Frobenius morphism of XX, which raises coordinates to the power qq. Then the number of rational points of XX is #X(𝔽q)=∑i=02dim⁡X(−1)i tr⁡(F∣Hci(Xˉ,ℚℓ)),\# X(\F_q) = \sum_{i=0}^{2 \dim X} (-1)^i \, \tr\big(F \mid H^i_c(\bar{X}, \Q_\ell)\big), where tr⁡\tr is the trace of a linear map.

Remarks

The points of X(𝔽q)X(\F_q) are the fixed points of the Frobenius morphism of Xˉ\bar{X}, so the formula is a Lefschetz fixed point formula, with the Lefschetz number on the right. Grothendieck proved it in a more general form, for a constructible ℓ\ell-adic sheaf ℱ\mathcal{F} on XX. Then the sum over x∈X(𝔽q)x \in X(\F_q) of the traces of Frobenius on the stalks ℱxˉ\mathcal{F}_{\bar{x}} equals the alternating sum of the traces of FF on Hci(Xˉ,ℱ)H^i_c(\bar{X}, \mathcal{F}). Example: for X=𝔸1X = \mathbb{A}^1, the only nonzero group is Hc2(Xˉ,ℚℓ)H^2_c(\bar{X}, \Q_\ell), of dimension 11, on which FF acts by qq. The formula gives #𝔸1(𝔽q)=q\# \mathbb{A}^1(\F_q) = q. For X=ℙ1X = \mathbb{P}^1, the groups H0H^0 and H2H^2 contribute 11 and qq, and the count is q+1q + 1. Compact supports are needed when XX is not proper: the ordinary cohomology of 𝔸𝔽ˉq1\mathbb{A}^1_{\bar{\F}_q} is ℚℓ\Q_\ell in degree 00 only, which would give the wrong count 11. Applied to X×𝔽qmX \times \F_{q^m} for all mm, the formula expresses the zeta function of XX as an alternating product of characteristic polynomials of FF, which proves its rationality.

Going deeper

For a student

This is the main bridge between point counts over finite fields and ℓ\ell-adic cohomology. It gives the rationality and the cohomological form of the zeta function. Deligne's bounds on the eigenvalues of FF then give estimates such as ∣#C(𝔽q)−q−1∣≤2gq\abs{\# C(\F_q) - q - 1} \le 2g\sqrt{q} for a smooth projective curve CC of genus gg. In the sheaf version it turns sums of characters, such as Gauss and Kloosterman sums, into traces on cohomology, which is how they are bounded.
