Statement

Let AA be an n×nn \times n complex matrix with columns v1,…,vn∈ℂnv_1, \dots, v_n \in \C^n. Let ∥v∥\norm{v} denote the Euclidean norm of v∈ℂnv \in \C^n. Then ∣det⁡A∣≤∏i=1n∥vi∥,\abs{\det A} \le \prod_{i=1}^{n} \norm{v_i}, where det⁡\det is the determinant. Equality holds if and only if some viv_i is 00 or the vectors v1,…,vnv_1, \dots, v_n are pairwise orthogonal.

Remarks

If the columns are linearly dependent, the left side is 00. Otherwise the Gram–Schmidt process gives A=QRA = QR with QQ unitary and RR upper triangular with diagonal entries riir_{ii}. Then ∣det⁡A∣=∏i∣rii∣\abs{\det A} = \prod_i \abs{r_{ii}}, and ∣rii∣\abs{r_{ii}} is the distance from viv_i to the span of v1,…,vi−1v_1, \dots, v_{i-1}, so ∣rii∣≤∥vi∥\abs{r_{ii}} \le \norm{v_i}.

Example: for A=(111−1)A = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 1 \\ 1 & -1 \end{pmatrix}, the columns are orthogonal with norm 2\sqrt{2}, and indeed ∣det⁡A∣=2=2⋅2\abs{\det A} = 2 = \sqrt{2} \cdot \sqrt{2}. For A=(1101)A = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 1 \\ 0 & 1 \end{pmatrix}, the bound is 1⋅21 \cdot \sqrt{2}, while det⁡A=1\det A = 1.

An equivalent form: if PP is an n×nn \times n positive semidefinite matrix, then det⁡P≤∏ipii\det P \le \prod_i p_{ii}. Apply it to P=A∗AP = A^* A, whose diagonal entries are ∥vi∥2\norm{v_i}^2. If all entries of AA satisfy ∣aij∣≤1\abs{a_{ij}} \le 1, the inequality gives ∣det⁡A∣≤nn/2\abs{\det A} \le n^{n/2}, which is the starting point of Hadamard's maximal determinant problem.

Going deeper

For a student

The inequality bounds the size of a determinant without computing it. It is used to bound the size of integer determinants in algorithms, and it gives the bound nn/2n^{n/2} for matrices with entries of absolute value at most 11. The positive semidefinite form is a special case of Fischer's inequality for block matrices.
