Definition

Let GG be a connected semisimple Lie group with finite centre, with Lie algebra 𝔤\mathfrak g, and let KK be a maximal compact subgroup. Let 𝔤=𝔨⊕𝔭\mathfrak g = \mathfrak k \oplus \mathfrak p be the corresponding Cartan decomposition, and let ∥⋅∥\norm{\cdot} be the norm on 𝔭\mathfrak p given by the Killing form. By the Cartan decomposition each g∈Gg \in G can be written g=kexp⁡Xg = k \exp X with k∈Kk \in K and X∈𝔭X \in \mathfrak p unique; put σ(g)=∥X∥\sigma(g) = \norm{X}. Let Ξ=φ0\Xi = \varphi_0 be the spherical function of parameter 00 given by Harish-Chandra's formula. Elements DD of the universal enveloping algebra U(𝔤ℂ)U(\mathfrak g_\C) act on smooth functions on GG as left-invariant differential operators f↦fDf \mapsto f D and as right-invariant differential operators f↦Dff \mapsto D f. Harish-Chandra's Schwartz space 𝒞(G)\mathcal{C}(G) is the set of smooth functions f ⁣:G→ℂf \colon G \to \C such that sup⁡g∈G ∣(DfE)(g)∣ Ξ(g)−1 (1+σ(g))r<∞\sup_{g \in G} \, \abs{(D f E)(g)} \, \Xi(g)^{-1} \, (1 + \sigma(g))^{r} < \infty for all D,E∈U(𝔤ℂ)D, E \in U(\mathfrak g_\C) and all r≥0r \ge 0.

Remarks

The suprema in the definition are seminorms, and they make 𝒞(G)\mathcal{C}(G) a Fréchet space. It is stable under left and right translations and under convolution, and it is contained in L2(G)L^2(G).

Example: every smooth function with compact support lies in 𝒞(G)\mathcal{C}(G), since Ξ\Xi is continuous and positive, so every supremum is over a compact set.

Non-example: Ξ\Xi itself is not in 𝒞(G)\mathcal{C}(G). With D=E=1D = E = 1 and r=1r = 1 the quantity is sup⁡g(1+σ(g))\sup_g (1 + \sigma(g)), which is infinite because σ\sigma is unbounded on the noncompact group GG.
